Use of crowdsourcing at Statistics Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has created an urgent need for data on this topic. Statistics Canada used, among other methods, crowdsourcing to collect information from the Canadian population about the impact of COVID-19 on different aspects of daily life. The presentation will summarize the context that led to the adoption of this data collection method, describe the methods put in place to remedy the shortcomings observed, give a brief overview of ongoing research projects to make better use of these data, and discuss the next steps to be taken in using crowdsourcing within the agency.

webinaires A graduate of the University of Ottawa (B.S. 1992 and M.Sc. 1996), Martin Renaud has been working at Statistics Canada since June 1992. Over the course of his career, he has had the opportunity to work on many different projects in methodology, in both economic and social statistics. Since April 2016, he has been chief of the Income and Housing Statistics Section in the Social Statistics Methods Division and for the last three months, he has been acting assistant director of the Income, Expenditure, Labour, and Housing Subdivision within the same division. Since March 2020, he is also responsible for the methodological aspect of the crowdsourcing projects that have been put in place to respond to the data needs created by the COVID-19 pandemic.
